Kaduna, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Women Wing in Kaduna State has marked this year’s International Women’s Day with an extended series of events held throughout March and April, focusing on women’s empowerment, skill acquisition, and socio-economic development.
The theme for this year’s celebration, *“Accelerate Action for Women and Girls: Rights, Equality and Empowerment,”* was brought to life through practical training sessions and motivational engagements involving over 30 women from various unions across the state.
Chairperson of the NLC Women Wing, Comrade Martha H. Banki, in her welcome address, emphasized the need for women to take proactive steps towards empowering themselves, their families, and their communities.
She appreciated the State Government for ensuring that women and girls are not left behind in the Kaduna State Government.
"We successfully trained 32 women in various vocational skills, including throw pillow making, head turbans, bead crafting, and both local and continental cuisine", Banki stressed.
“We appreciate the Kaduna State Government, especially Honourable Adamu Ismaila for his support on labour matters, and our Congress Chairperson, Comrade Ayuba Suleiman Magaji, for his unwavering commitment to women’s welfare,” she said.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Hawau Evelyn Yusuf of the Department of Criminology and Gender Studies, Kaduna State University, shared her personal journey to financial independence. She urged women to avoid complacency and emphasized that hard work and dedication are critical to achieving success in today’s society.
Also speaking, the Governor of the Women Wing’s Skills Acquisition Programme, Comrade Murna Zuwai Musa, stressed the importance of economic independence for women, stating that in the current economic climate, no woman should rely solely on her husband for survival.
One of the trainees, Comrade Jaiyeola Olatunji, shared her experiences from the program, expressing hope that participants would replicate the knowledge and skills gained in their various unions, aligning with the NLC’s tradition of peer learning.
Goodwill messages were delivered by Comrades Opara Joachim, Michael Toyin, Tina Smart, and Barrister Julie Ariahu. They praised the NLC Women Wing for organizing an impactful program and advocated for its continuity and expansion.
The event, which ran from April 7th to 10th, concluded with a call to action for greater investment in women’s empowerment initiatives as a pathway to sustainable development and gender equality.
