Teachers’ Union Disclaims CPST Protest Plan, Reaffirms Commitment to Negotiations on Minimum Wage

The Kaduna State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has responded to a widely circulated press statement regarding a planned protest by a group calling itself the Coalition of Primary School Teachers (CPST) over the non-implementation of the minimum wage. The union has firmly distanced itself from the planned demonstration, stating that the CPST is not recognized as an official organ of the NUT.

In a statement issued by NUT leadership, State Chairman Ibrahim Dalhatu and State Secretary Adamu Ayuba Kaltungo emphasized that the NUT is the only body authorized to represent and advocate for both primary and secondary school teachers in Kaduna State. They highlighted ongoing efforts to address the issue of minimum wage implementation, including meetings with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the state government's establishment of a verification committee.

The union clarified that the verification process, which involves collecting biometric data of teachers and other civil servants, is essential to ensuring an accurate database for the smooth implementation of the minimum wage. According to the NUT, this effort is expected to yield long-term benefits for teachers across the state.

Rejecting the protest approach advocated by the CPST, the NUT reiterated its commitment to resolving issues through collective bargaining and constructive dialogue. The union expressed confidence in the current administration's openness to fair negotiations, contrasting it with the stance of the previous government.

The NUT has called on its members to remain patient and allow ongoing efforts to take their course. It also urged Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, to ensure the verification committee expedites its work and submits its findings promptly.

The union reassured teachers of its dedication to securing the implementation of the minimum wage and the associated consequential adjustments for all teachers, promising continued collaboration with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to achieve this goal.

The NUT's statement underscores its stance against premature strikes or protests, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and negotiation in achieving sustainable solutions for educators in Kaduna State.
