ZARIA – House of Representatives Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary, praising the organization’s enduring resilience and crucial role in Nigeria's democratic landscape. However, his message also carried a strong call for improved welfare for the nation's journalists.

In a statement released on Saturday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Speaker Abbas emphasized the NUJ's continued relevance and its significant contribution to national development. He acknowledged the media's vital role as the "fourth estate of the realm," highlighting the immense power and influence journalists wield in shaping public discourse and holding authorities accountable.

"Nigerian journalists have made immeasurable contributions to our democracy and development," the Speaker stated, commending their dedication to ethical reporting and their commitment to keeping the government in check.

However, the Speaker also addressed the challenges faced by journalists, particularly concerning their welfare. He urged for concrete steps to be taken to ensure better working conditions and remuneration for media professionals.

"Better journalists will make a better society," he asserted, emphasizing the importance of supporting those who play a crucial watchdog role in the polity.

Furthermore, Speaker Abbas stressed the need for continuous professional development in the face of rapidly evolving information and communication technology (ICT). He encouraged journalists to "continue to train and retrain themselves to be more ethical and development-oriented," and to embrace the need to "learn, unlearn, and relearn."

The Speaker also pledged the House of Representatives' commitment to supporting legislation aimed at promoting the sanctity of journalism and enhancing the capacity of media professionals. He expressed his readiness to welcome bills that would strengthen the media and ensure journalists can perform their duties effectively and without undue hardship.

The Speaker's message serves as a timely reminder of the critical role journalists play in a democratic society and the importance of ensuring their well-being and professional growth.
