The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ahmadu Bello University Zaria branch, has disbursed N4.4 million in scholarships to 22 indigent students studying various courses at the University.
Comrade Haruna M. Jibril, ASUU Chairman, announced this during the scholarship award ceremony held at the Yusuf Bala Usman Hall, Main Campus, Samaru.
He explained that the scholarship for indigent students was initiated by the national body of ASUU, with a mandate to select at least 2 students from the national pool, while the remaining 20 were selected by the branch.
Comrade Jibril stated that the number of beneficiaries had doubled this year, from 10 to 22, following congress approval to increase the number.
According to him, the beneficiaries were carefully selected after intensive screening by the committee assigned with the screening mandate.
He expressed hope to do more in the subsequent years, emphasizing ASUU's sympathy and concern for students facing supportive problems in continuing their studies.
In his message, the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Professor Kabiru Bala, urged other in-house unions to emulate ASUU by providing support to indigent students at the University.
Represented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Sahalu Junaid, he said that if other in-house unions followed ASUU's example by supporting indigent students with scholarships, it would significantly impact the lives of many students whose academic activities are facing serious challenges.
Professor Kabiru Bala commended ASUU for assisting indigent students for the second year, noting a significant improvement in the program.
Also speaking, the Chief Security Officer of the University, Ashiru T. Zango, applauded ASUU for its humanitarian consideration, acknowledging that his division had benefited from 42 bicycles, which made a significant impact on security operations in the university.
