The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has called on the state government to ensure fairness and transparency in the distribution of tractors acquired through the World Bank-assisted Agricultural and Rural Management Supporting Assets for Rural Development (ACReSAL) project.
In a press statement issued by the party’s Acting Publicity Secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, APC expressed concerns that the distribution process lacks transparency, similar to past interventions like the N-Cares program, which were shrouded in secrecy and marred by allegations of favoritism.
The statement highlighted that unlike neighboring states like Benue, Nassarawa, and Niger, where information regarding the ACReSAL facilities and finances was readily available, Plateau State has maintained an air of secrecy, fueling suspicion and fear among the populace.
The APC said the need for the government to be transparent about the total loan amount, repayment terms, and interest rates associated with the ACReSAL project.
The party stressed that the tractors were purchased using public funds and that the people of Plateau State have a right to know all details surrounding the loan facility.
The statement expressed concerns that the tractors might be distributed based on political patronage rather than need, with the risk of falling into the hands of politicians who may not be genuine farmers.
The APC urged the government to prioritize the needs of smallholder farmers and ensure that the tractors are utilized for their intended purpose of boosting agricultural productivity in the state.
