The North West Zone has successfully concluded its zonal team sports elimination for the 8th National Youth Games, with Kaduna State emerging as the overall top performer.
The elimination games, held from August 28 to September 15, 2024, at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, saw teams from seven states - Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara - compete in various sports.
Kaduna State dominated the games, qualifying in several sports including football, volleyball, beach volleyball, hockey, and cricket. Sokoto State also performed well, qualifying in football, handball, and volleyball. Other states that qualified in various sports include Kano, Jigawa, Kebbi, and Zamfara.
The top-performing teams will represent the North West Zone at the 8th National Youth Games, scheduled to hold later this year.
The Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development North West Zone, Mrs. Ibung Bernadette, congratulated the qualified teams and praised the participating states for their sportsmanship and dedication to youth development. She called on all qualified states from the zone to be good ambassadors.
In an interview, Kaduna State Director of Sports Development, Mrs. Marry K. Vying, congratulated Team Kaduna for their dominant performance. "I am happy the outing is successful after we registered for 9 events and won 8 different events. This demonstrates how prepared Kaduna State athletes are ahead of the National Youth Games in Delta State," she said.
Mrs. Vying also mentioned that the ministry planned an immediate camping exercise to further prepare the state athletes. "Our plan earlier was to invite the teams to a camp, but the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest disrupted the plan.
Immediately after, the federal ministry of sports development called for this zonal elimination, so we are happy with our overall performance," she added.
