The much-anticipated Gombe State Inter-Secondary Schools Athletics Championship has officially been scheduled to kick off on September 29th, 2024. This decision was reached during the 5th sitting of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), which took place on August 10th, 2024, at GOFCECON Hotel, Gombe.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Hon. Ahmed Shuaibu Gara-Gombe, it was noted that significant progress has been made in the preparations for the event. Reports from three key subcommittees—Transport and Accommodation, Media, and Technical—were presented, reviewed, and accepted by the MOC.
The first report, delivered by Secretary Mr. Tanko Adamu, outlined the committee's achievements so far, including visits to the proposed schools that will serve as Games Villages. The report was unanimously accepted, reflecting the relentless efforts made in ensuring the readiness of these facilities. However, the report also highlighted areas needing urgent attention, such as the condition of toilets and the necessity for environmental sanitation and fumigation, which would be handled by the Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency (GOSEPA).
The Media subcommittee, led by Secretary Yakubu Maikudi, presented the content for radio jingles intended to publicize the event. After deliberation, the MOC approved the content. The committee also introduced a new model for disseminating updates on the competition, which required an additional budget.
The Technical subcommittee, represented by Secretary Simon Ayuba, focused on essential logistics, including medals, meal tickets, committee tags, and numbering tags for the athletes in camp. These items are critical for the smooth operation of the championship and were also approved by the MOC.
The MOC Chairman, Hon. Ahmed Shuaibu Gara-Gombe, expressed satisfaction with the reports and resolutions, endorsing the September 29th date for the opening ceremony of the championship. Additionally, the committee confirmed the appointment of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jauro Usman as the Camp Commandant, who will be assisted by Mr. Ibrahim Isyaku of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps and Ketos Jerry Turawa from GOSTEC.
In preparation for the event, the committee will send a formal request to GOSEPA for fumigation and to the Malaria Control Agency for the provision of mosquito nets to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all participants.
The meeting was adjourned with plans to reconvene next week, where additional subcommittee reports will be presented to further solidify the arrangements for the championship.
