The Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has extended his deepest sympathies to the families of students and staff of St. Academy School, Jos, who tragically lost their lives in the collapse of a two-storey school building.
The incident occurred behind St. Murumba in Busa Buji, Jos North Local Government Area.
Governor Mutfwang, in a statement, described the tragedy as both unfortunate and untimely. He expressed profound sorrow and grief, stating that nothing could be more painful and heart-wrenching than this somber event.
The Governor lauded the swift action of the search and rescue teams, as well as the members of the public who rushed to the scene to aid in the evacuation of the surviving students and staff. Their timely intervention, he noted, was crucial in rescuing lives amidst the chaos.
In response to the disaster, Governor Mutfwang has called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency to provide all necessary support to the survivors of the collapse.
He expressed deep regret that the students were trapped in the building while writing their promotion examinations, a circumstance that exacerbates the tragedy.
The governor also extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving mothers and families who lost their children in this unfortunate incident.
"Words cannot fully comfort the grieving families over their immense loss," he said, praying for the God of all comfort to console and uphold them during this difficult period.
Governor Mutfwang took the opportunity to highlight the importance of Executive Order 003, recently signed into law. He emphasized that the order is designed to protect citizens from such disasters, prevent Jos from turning into a slum, and ensure strict compliance with building regulations as per the Greater Jos Master Plan.
"This regulatory framework is aimed at averting future tragedies and promoting safe construction practices within the state."
The Governor then prayed for the Almighty God to grant the families, the school, and the broader community the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss. He hoped that God's consoling presence would bring solace to all affected during these trying times.
