His Royal Highness, Dr. Abubakar Yahaya, the Etsu Nupe, has expressed profound gratitude to Almighty for the gift of life and the opportunity to witness another edition of the prestigious horse racing event, a cherished sporting tradition inherited from forebearers.
The Etsu Nupe highlighted the event’s significance in fostering unity and friendship among Nigerians and their neighbors from Niger Republic and Cameroon, who were present to participate in this grand celebration of sport.
Horse racing, as stated by the Etsu Nupe, serves as a vital platform for promoting peace and stability among neighboring countries. "We see this sporting activity as very significant in the field of uniting people and promoting peace and stability in our respective countries," he said.
The event’s ability to generate and promote togetherness and friendliness was underscored as crucial in today's world.
He appreciated the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria and its National Coordinator, Sarkin Dawakin Nupe, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar Dangi, for their efforts in organizing such a significant event. The Etsu Nupe also wished happiness and success to both the winners and spectators of the event.
Representing the Niger State Governor, His Excellency Mohammed Umar Bago, the Head of Service, Engr. Abubakar Salisu, extended felicitations to the President of Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria, the Etsu Nupe, and congratulated the entire racing federation and the winners of various prizes.
He noted the deep roots of horse racing in the region, with the racecourse dating back to 1912, making the sport a part of their heritage for over a century. "We thank God for being here today and congratulate all those who won this particular race and we wish them memorable celebrations," Salisu remarked.
Professor Benjamin Gugong, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Sports Development, expressed his elation at hosting the 1st anniversary of the Renewed Hope Horse Racing Derby in the state.
He conveyed his gratitude that Kaduna State was chosen to host this event to celebrate President Ahmed Bola Tinubu's first anniversary in office.
Gugong highlighted the peaceful nature of the event, stating, "We thanked God from the first day to this moment that we are rounding this program; there was no accident and nothing bad happened, signifying peace and unity."
On his part, the Paramount Ruler of Two land, Oluwo of Iwo Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi, from Osun State, Southwest Nigeria, called for the federal and state governments to promote and encourage horse racing across the nation.
The Oba took time to draw comparisons to the renowned Kentucky Derby in the United States, he emphasized the potential of horse racing to become a significant sporting event in Nigeria. "I will start this in my domain. This is the first time coming to watch the horse racing derby in Nigeria, and it is a beautiful experience," he said, appreciating the beauty and skill involved in the sport.
In an interview, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar Dangi, the National Coordinator of the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria, shared insights into the tournament's outcomes. He noted that several major standing winners were defeated, stressing the competitive nature of the event. "Today is very historic in the history of racing activities in Nigeria," Dangi remarked, celebrating the emergence of three new champions.
Dangi also discussed the challenges faced by the federation, emphasizing their experience and adaptability in managing these issues.
He acknowledged the support from corporate bodies, multinationals, government agencies, and some state governments but called for more robust federal funding. "We still call on the federal government to provide special funding for horse racing activities just as the way it provided for football, basketball, and other sporting activities," he urged.
