Gusau, Zamfara State - The Zamfara state government, in partnership with the Health for Life and Development Foundation (HELDF) and supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has organized a five-day workshop for 50 Nurses and Midwives on Maternal and Child Mortality Prevention.
The training, which aimed to improve the capacity of health providers in preventing maternal death and managing common causes of maternal and child mortality, was held at the Nigeria Medical Association state Secretariat in Gusau.
Executive Director of HELDEF, Dr. Abubakar Danladi, noted that Nigeria accounts for 14% of global maternal deaths, with 70% of these occurring in northern states. The training aimed to equip frontline health workers with the skills to prevent maternal deaths.
The training covered topics such as direct and indirect causes of preventable maternal death, postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, ruptured uterus, sepsis, anemia, and malaria. Facilitators included Dr. Hadiza Kanoma and Inno Umar Ruwan Doruwa.
Participants, including Madina Salihu and Mfon Etim Nyong, expressed their appreciation for the training, which they believed would improve their skills and knowledge in managing maternal and child health.
The Assistant Representative of UNFPA, Dr. Audi Alayande, commended the participants' commitment and dedication, urging them to apply their newfound knowledge to improve maternal health outcomes in their respective workplaces.
The training is expected to contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality in Zamfara State and Nigeria as a whole.
