As about 150 amateur golfers converge on Kaduna for the 9th Golf and Tour Group Tournament, the event is expected to tee-off at the Kaduna Golf Club and the Wuyep Lakeside Golf Club Air Force Base on June 21, 2024.
The participants, part of a diverse group of retired military and security officers, active and serving lawyers, civil servants, and business people, also took the opportunity to visit several key locations in Kaduna, including the Kaduna Museum, Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), and the Jamiya Matan Arewa (JMA) orphanage home.
Leading the group, Air Vice Marshal Clement A. Aroriode (Rtd), highlighted that these visits are integral to the activities planned for this 9th edition of the golf tournament. He emphasized the cultural and social significance of these visits, enhancing the overall experience of the event.
During a press conference, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Wing Commander Ibrahim Sarki (Rtd), promised that this year’s tournament would be the best of its kind. The LOC Chairman elaborated that the golf and tour group comprises individuals from various professional backgrounds, contributing to a rich and diverse tournament atmosphere.
The tournament's schedule is packed with exciting activities, including visits to the orphanage home to provide support to the needy, tours of DICON, and explorations of the museum. The competition itself is divided between the two prestigious golf clubs, culminating in a grand finale and trophy presentation at the Kaduna Golf Club.
Wing Commander Sarki also announced that the ceremonial tee-off would occur at the Kaduna Golf Club on Saturday, June 22, 2024. This event will see attendance from high-profile dignitaries, including Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani, the Chief of Defence Staff, the GOC 1 Division Nigerian Army headquarters, and the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), among others.
Guest players from NDA Zaria, Wuyep, and Kaduna Golf Club are also set to participate, competing for various prizes. Highlighting the event's prestige, Sarki noted that previous tournaments have been held in Abuja, Calabar, Ilorin, Ibadan, Enugu, and even Uganda, with the choice of Kaduna signifying the state's improved security situation.
During their tour of the Kaduna Museum, group members were guided by Museum Educator Ishaku Muhammad Bello, who showcased the rich cultural artifacts housed there. Rear Admiral Dogara Gora (Rtd), a group member, expressed that the museum visit was highly educational and enlightening.
At the Jamiya Matan Arewa orphanage, the group was warmly received by President Hajiya Rabi Saulawa, who commended their visit and provided historical insights into the orphanage and the activities of the northern women's group. While there was no physical presentation of donations, the group pledged ongoing support to the orphanage.
The group’s visit to DICON was met with enthusiasm from Major General Aniedi Edet, the Director General, who expressed his joy at their visit and promised continued support for the group's initiatives.
This year’s tournament in Kaduna not only promises competitive sportsmanship but also fosters a deep sense of community and cultural appreciation, showcasing the rich heritage and improved security of the region.
